Scrap Art

Metal is an expensive material so I don't often buy new sheets of metal for my projects. There is a scrap metal box from the jewelry class that I often go through when making my jewelry. This time I had the idea to make a sheet of metal out of the scraps that I found in the box. This process was tedious but interesting. Most of the pieces used were mainly triangles but I tried to incorporate pieces like circles, arcs, and rectangles. I didn't alter any of the shapes that I found.

The Process

I originally started to connect pieces together from the scrap metal box in order to see what shape I could make. After a while working on it, I decided that I would make a rectangle out of the scrap pieces. This took weeks to find and fit each individual piece. I left a few spots empty due to time constraint which I decided to fill in the holes on the back drop with some etchings. The etching process took a long time since the lines were very fine and the acid had a hard time reaching the metal. To clean the tar and the left over glue from the tape off. I used paint remover to take off the tar and sanded down the pack to fully clean the piece. I then soldered each piece onto the backdrop. After soldering, I left the piece alone as I didn't know how to finish it. A few weeks later, I decided to fit in the gaps as I didn't like how it looked. As of now I have found enough pieces to fill in the holes but did not get time to solder the pieces together.
