Whether members chose to go to college, trade school, military, or straight into the workforce, 4-H helps prepare them for the road ahead. Schools get students prepared for scholar traits like writing, reading, and mathematics. These are very important skills, but there are others that the schools don’t help students grow. 4-H helps its members grow their social skills, work ethic, stress management, financial skills, confidence, independence, responsibility, and self-motivation. These life skills give members a leg up when they leave to pursue higher education or a career.

As members learn academic skills in school, they are also learning social and life skills that will further prepare them for whatever path they choose to take. Depending on what individual projects members participate in, they learn new expertise related to that specific project. Projects like cooking, gardening, and sewing prepare members for basic household chores. Another great and valuable project is nutrition. Those who take this project learn how to have a healthy diet that they will take with them into the future.

Community service and leadership and two of the biggest projects in clubs and even if a member decides not to take these projects, they will still improve these attributes. Members take pride in helping others and being good examples. They understand the importance of community and being a leader to others. Leadership is encouraged and rewarded by the 4-H community. 4-Hers who have graduated from highschool and over the years have shown growth and good leadership, are able to earn scholarships.

The 4-Hers who move onto adulthood are not afraid because they know that they are strong enough to make it through even the toughest of times. No matter what path they take, they will always be ready for what life has to throw at them.
